Mini PCs for Surveillance

Mini PCs cover the small-footprint roles on a surveillance system: a client workstation at a guard desk, a display driver behind a monitor or video wall, or a recording node on a site with a low camera count that does not justify a full server.

The spec that matters depends on the role. A viewing client is limited by decode capability and display output, so prioritize graphics capability and the number of supported monitors over raw storage. A small recording node is limited by sustained disk write and available drive bays, so confirm the drive capacity and interface before assuming a compact chassis can hold the retention you need.

Placement is a practical consideration too. These units are often mounted behind a monitor or inside a small enclosure, which limits airflow. Keep ventilation clear and avoid sealed cabinets without ventilation, particularly for units running continuous decode.

If the site needs continuous multi-camera recording with real retention, a purpose-built VMS server is the better fit; mini PCs are best kept to client and light-duty roles.
