PoE Injectors
PoE injectors solve the cases a switch cannot: a single device at the far end of an existing non-PoE network, a high-draw camera or speaker that exceeds the per-port class available on the installed switch, or a temporary deployment where adding a switch is not practical.
Match the injector to the device standard. A device that negotiates for higher-power PoE will not come up reliably on a lower-class injector, and a device that only needs standard PoE will not be harmed by a higher-capacity injector. Check the wattage the endpoint requests at startup, which is often higher than its steady-state draw.
Distance still follows normal Ethernet rules: plan for a total run inside the standard 100 meter limit from the injector to the device, and account for voltage drop over long runs when powering heaters or illuminators. For any install with more than a few powered endpoints, a PoE switch is cleaner to service than a rack full of injectors.
Injectors are also useful as a diagnostic tool — powering a suspect camera directly from a known-good injector quickly isolates whether the fault is the switch port, the cable, or the device.

PoE Injector Buyer's Guide
When a single injector beats a new switch, and how to match wattage and standard to the device.
When to use an injector
Injectors add power to one device on a non-PoE switch, power a single high-draw device your switch cannot support, or extend a remote camera without replacing network gear.
Match the standard and wattage
Choose an injector that meets or exceeds the device’s PoE class (802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt). Avoid passive (non-standard) injectors on standards-based cameras — they can damage equipment.
Data rate and distance
Use gigabit injectors for high-resolution cameras. Total Ethernet run from switch to device through the injector is still limited to 100m (328 ft) on copper.
Installer checklist
- Device PoE class confirmed
- Gigabit rated
- Total run under 100m
- Outlet available at injector location
Frequently asked questions
Does an injector extend cable distance?
No. The 100m Ethernet limit applies to the full run; use a PoE extender or fiber for longer distances.
