IP Video Intercoms
Video intercoms handle the entry point that cameras alone cannot: verifying who is at the door and letting them in. On commercial buildings this typically means a door station at the main entrance, an indoor station or software client where staff answer, and a relay tied to the door strike or gate operator.
Choose the door station around the environment first. Exterior entrances need weather-rated, vandal-resistant housings and enough low-light performance to identify a face against backlight from the street. Interior and reception stations can prioritize a wider viewing angle and a cleaner finish.
Confirm how the intercom will be answered before you order. Some sites want a dedicated indoor monitor, some want calls routed to a mobile app, and others want the stream integrated into the same VMS operators already watch. That decision affects which platform you standardize on more than any hardware spec.
Door release wiring is the other detail worth confirming early — verify whether the strike is fail-safe or fail-secure and whether the intercom relay is switching it directly or handing off to an access control panel.

Video Intercom Buyer's Guide
Pick the right IP video intercom for doors, gates and multi-tenant entries.
Where it will mount
Single-door units suit offices and back entrances. Gate and multi-tenant entries need weather ratings, vandal resistance and sometimes directory buttons or keypads.
Integration
SIP support lets the intercom call desk phones, softphones or mobile apps. ONVIF support lets the camera stream record in your VMS alongside other cameras. Relay outputs trigger door strikes or gate operators.
Power and wiring
Most IP intercoms are PoE powered. Door strikes often need separate power — check lock voltage and current before relying on the intercom’s relay.
Installer checklist
