Installer notes
Power budget is the number that matters
Port count tells you how many devices plug in. The total power budget tells you how many can actually draw at once. Add up worst-case draw — PTZs, heaters and IR illuminators at night — and leave headroom.
PoE, PoE+ and Hi-PoE are not interchangeable
Standard PoE covers fixed domes and bullets. PoE+ is the practical floor for PTZs, heated housings and most intercoms. Devices above that need Hi-PoE or a dedicated injector — our PoE switch buying guide breaks down which is which.
Keep the uplinks free
Use the uplink ports for the run back to the core or recorder rather than filling them with cameras. It keeps camera traffic off the access ports and makes future expansion a patch, not a rebuild.
